Social cognition it is defined as the ability to understand and act based on information obtained from interaction with other individuals. It includes dimensions such as the recognition of emotional expressions, imitation and the ability “to read” the feelings and intentions of others. Several types of deficiencies in social cognition have been observed in neurological and psychiatric disorders. On the other hand, it has been observed that stress affects performance in many cognitive functions. Some studies show that stress could have effects on cognition according to its intensity, improving or worsening, depending on stress levels. However, there is little information regarding its influence on social cognition. The response to stress and emotional perception are modulated by different environmental and genetic variables. Early stress in life is an important environmental variable and some gene polymorphisms such as OXTR involved in prosocial behaviors, SLC6A4 involved in emotional regulation and OPRM1 involved in both stress response and social cognition are considered relevant among genetic variables. The hypothesis of this thesis states that "Stress decreases social cognition, and this decrease is affected both by early stress history and by polymorphisms of the OXTR, SLC6A4 and OPRM1 genes". This is a case-control study in which social cognition were assessed in 72 people through the recognition of facial expressions and a mentalization test or ability to read the mind. This evaluation was carried out in the presence and absence of stress. It was found that stress decreases the facial recognition of emotions and that mentalization is affected by the inverted U-shaped cortisol load. We found that in relation to stress sensitivity, individuals with a history of trauma, as well as in individuals carrying the A allele of the OXTR gene improves mentalization and the G allele carriers of the OPRM1 gene, improves facial emotion recognition. Interactions were found between the temperament trait "novelty seeking" and the carriers of genotype A of the OXTR gene. The decrease in social cognition in response to stress would be the result of an overload of the social cognition system that could be related to a higher risk of mental disorders. The results of this study could contribute to the detection of people at risk and facilitate their early intervention....
