The etiological agent of Chagas disease is a hemoflagellate protozoon called Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted mainly by known vectors such as kissing bugs. In Chile, the cycle of wild transmission is mediated by kissing bug of Mepraia genus, which are parasitized in different proportions from Arica and Parinacota region to Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins region. For this work, 176 bugs M. spinolai were collected in Las Chinchillas National Reserve during May 2015. Adults and different nymphs stages were fed five times with T. cruzi free infection mice (Mus musculus) and underwent two variable periods of fasting between feeds. Trypanosoma cruzi was detected by PCR extracting DNA from fecal samples of each insect, T. cruzi was genotyped by DNA probes belonging to the four lineages most frequently found in Chile and survival of nymphs and adults during the period of the experiment was evaluated. Percentage of T. cruzi infection in wild M. spinolai was 29.27%. The highest values were found in the III nymphs (61%), which allowed to differentiate unique and mixed infections with the TcI, TcII and TcV lineages. In addition, nymphs III presented greater resistance to periods of fasting. Survival of nymphs does not seem to be affected when they are infected with T. cruzi. Results with the different groups of insects were discussed regarding the pathogenicity of T. cruzi in M. spinolai naturally infected....

ABSTRACT Obesity is a serious problem in public health worldwide and constitutes a risk to develop other metabolic diseases that are the main cause of death in the adult population. Objective: To determine the association between adiponectin, nutritional status and the metabolic characteristics in Mexican children. Methods: a comparative cross-sectional study, involving 298 children from 6 to 12 years of age and gender. According to the BMI we classified in eutrophic (BMI pc <75) and obese children (BMI ≥95). Parameters assessed included BMI, waist circumference, skinfold measurements, adiponectin, glucose, serum lipids, insulin and homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). The children classified between BMI 75 and 95% were not selected for this study. The correlation between anthropometric measures, metabolic profile and adiponectin was assessed. The metabolic syndrome was defined according the IDF criteria. Results: The risk factors identified were: impaired fasting glucose (21.2 and 18.4%), hypertriglyceridemia (6.7 and 25.8%), low HDL-cholesterol levels (5.3 and 24%), HOMA-IR (1.6 and 21.7%), for the children without and with obesity, respectively. Metabolic syndrome was identified only in the obesity group (12.9%). Among obese children with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, there was a difference in the mean value of adiponectin, whereas among the eutrophic children and obese children without pathology (p<0.001). The iliac crest skinfold along with the waist circumference displayed an inverse relation with the adiponectin (p<0.001). Conclusion: A high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors was identified among children, even in those who do not have obesity, and they are directly associated with lower levels of adiponectin. The iliac skinfold along with the wais cir...
