Abstract | dc.description.abstract | Boldo (Peumus boldus Molina) is a widely used medicinal
planto However, its pbysiological effects are not well known. Recent studies in animals
sbmoed tbat certain components o/ boldo relax smootb muscle and prolong intestinal transito
Aim: to assess tbe effects o/ a dry boldo extract on oro cecal transit time in normal bumans.
Sub¡';.:~t~ .r,mdmetbods: Twelve volunteers received 2.5 g o/ a dry boldo extract or a placebo (glucose)
durtng two successive periods o/ /our days. On tbe /ourtb day, 20 g o/laetulose were
administered and breatb bydrogen was collected every 15mino Oro cecal transit time was defined
as the time in wbicb breatb bydrogen increased by 20 ppm over tbe /asting level. Results:
Oro c"cal transit time was larger after dry boldo extract administration, compared to placebo
(112.5 i: i5.4 and 87 ± 11.8 min respectively, paired tp< 0.05). Conclusions: Dry boldo extract
prOIOllgs c,rocecal transit time, a possible explanation /or its medicinal use. | es_CL |
