Abstractdc.description.abstractBerberis buxifolia Lam. (common name "calafate") is known as a souree of berberine. Upon restudying the stem bark and roots of this plant, the presence of berberine was confirmed, and the pavine alkaloids (-)-argemonine and (-)·norargemonine, an incompletely characterized bisbenzyl-isoquinoline, and the Iignan syringaresinol were isolated. This is the first report on the isolation of pa'.oe alkaloids and a Iignan from a Berberis species0es_CL
