Abstract
dc.description.abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the elements that determine the levels of formal education of young people, and how they affect their incorporation into the labor market. For this study, the national survey CASEN1987 and information corresponding to the System of Education Quality Measurement (SIMCE) 1988 were used as the source of information. The study begins with a diagnosis of the educational levels of the Chilean population, in particular analyzes the educational situation and participation in the labor force of young people of 14 th 24 years. To analyze the factors that explain the number of years of study they defined two models that consider schooling in relation to the age of the young. On the other hand, models were also defined to analyze the participation of young people in the workforce. Finally, the effects of educational and labor variables on youth income levels were studied. In the defined models, the parental schooling, the number of people in the household, the educational dependency, the age of the young person, geographical area of residence and the results of the SIMCE test were considered as explanatory variables.
