Abstract
A survey for Anisakis sp. larvae was undertaken in 311 Pacific jack mackerel in two seaports located on the coastal region of the North of Chile, during July-October, 1975. The average number of the infection was 27.0% and no relation with the sex of the host was established. However, a close relationship between the fish size and the frequency of parasitized specimens was observed (r- 0.76). The same relation was apparent for the sexual maturity and frequency of parasitism (males, r = 0.87; females, r = 0.94). This is the first report on Anisakis larvae in the Pacific jack mackerel in Chile and it has been pointed out that these nematodes are potentially pathogenic for human beings.
