Elementos filosófico-políticos en la historia de la Conquista (1599) de Cristóbal del Castillo

Abstract

Este ensayo tiene como objetivo reconocer algunos elementos filosófico-políticos presentes en la Historia de la Conquista (1599) de Cristóbal del Castillo. Para ello nos focalizaremos, por una parte, en su narración de la Noche Triste y, por otra, en sus referencias a uno de los calendarios mesoamericanos, el tonalpohualli. Procuraremos establecer algunas consideraciones en torno a las ideas de Cristóbal del Castillo, poniendo en escena el contenido filosófico-político presente en las letras de este cronista, abriendo con ello espacio para reconsiderar el lugar de esta poco conocida obra y el sentido de su relato en el mundo cultural novohispano.

This essay aims to identify some politico-philosophical elements present in the History of the Conquest (1599) written by Cristobal del Castillo. To this purpose we will focus, on the one hand, on his narration of the Noche Triste (The Night of Sorrows) and, on the other, on his references to one of the Mesoamerican calendars, the tonalpohualli. We will put forward some considerations around Cristobal del Castillo's ideas, highlighting the politico-philosophical content present in the chronicler's personal letters, in order to reconsider the significance of his story-telling and the place this little-known work occupies in the cultural world of New Spain.
