El siglo de la humillación en el pensamiento de los líderes de La República Popular China

Abstract

La presente tesis propone un estudio longitudinal sobre el pensamiento de los cinco líderes supremos de la República Popular China, respecto de sus interpretaciones históricas del pasado de las relaciones internacionales del país, particularmente el periodo catalogado como un siglo de humillación entre 1840 y 1949. Dicho siglo consiste en un proceso extendido por cien años de agresión y ocupación de China llevado a cabo por potencias occidentales y Japón, aprovechándose éstas de la debilidad de la dinastía Qing gobernante y luego de la pasividad del Kuomintang, para imponer tratados desfavorables a China. Recurrentemente, cada líder se referirá a dicho periodo y lo adaptará en su discurso en base a su coyuntura política correspondiente. No obstante, todos tendrán en común un fuerte elemento identitario nacionalista que buscará fortalecer la legitimidad de su liderazgo y del Partido Comunista de China, como también de la RPCh, recordando que sólo éstos lograron poner término a la humillante condición histórica. Asimismo, la narrativa sobre dicho siglo consistirá en un fuerte principio orientador de políticas públicas de China, que ilustrará cómo China se ve a sí misma, su visión de mundo y el comportamiento internacional de cada gobierno de la RPCh en la búsqueda de estatus. Para abordar aquello, este trabajo emplea el Análisis Político del Discurso para el nivel de análisis doméstico; el Análisis de Política Exterior para el nivel de análisis entre lo doméstico y lo internacional; y la Teoría de la Identidad Social para el nivel internacional. Se espera contribuir con ello a la comprensión de China, su historia y sus relaciones internacionales, como también las políticas de cada gobierno en su búsqueda por restablecer el estatus de gran potencia y gran civilización con que el país se ha identificado históricamente hasta hoy.

This thesis proposes a longitudinal study on the thought of the five supreme leaders of the People’s Republic of China, regarding their historical interpretations of its past international relations, particularly the period classified as a century of humiliation between 1840 and 1949. This century represents an extended hundred-year process of aggression and occupation of China carried out by Western powers and Japan, taking advantage of the weakness of the ruling Qing dynasty and later the passivity of the Kuomintang, to impose unfavorable treaties to China. Each leader will constantly refer to said period and adapt it in their political discourse depending on its corresponding political context. However, they will all have in common a strong element of national identity that will seek to strengthen the legitimacy of their leadership and of the Chinese Communist Party, as well as the People's Republic, remembering that only these entities could put an end to China’s humiliating historical condition. Likewise, the narrative about that century will consist of a strong guiding principle of China's public policies, illustrating how China sees itself, its worldview, and the international behavior of each PRC government in their quest for status. To address this, this thesis employs Political Discourse Analysis for the domestic level of analysis; Foreign Policy Analysis between the domestic and international level of analysis; and Social Identity Theory for the international level of analysis. Thus, this work is expected to contribute to the understanding of China, its history and its international relations, as well as the policies of each government in its quest to reestablish the great power status and great civilization status with which the country has historically identified itself to this day.
