Biosolids are a residue of water treatment, which when are treated and/or processed, can be recycled and used as co-fertilizing agents in soils. They are also a pollution focus of organic compounds. Triclocarban (TCC) has been widely used since 1970, as antimicrobial agent in soaps, mouthwashes and toothpastes. This compound, is non-polar, reason why it binds with organic matter of the biosolids. The determination of the bioavailable fraction involves the use of plants or animals and prolonged study time. Therefore, it is necessary to develop simulating methodologies for a rapid and simple determination of the bioavailability of TCC in soils amended with biosolids. Two extraction methods may be suitable: the use of an aqueous solution of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and the aqueous extraction with CaCl2 followed by an extraction with the rotating disk in two orientations, horizontal and vertical (EA/RDSE), using as vegetal tissue wheat plants. In crops of wheat plants in soil-biosolid systems, TCC was detected in the roots. On the other hand, in plants grew with spiked biosolids and biosolids with high “native” concentration of TCC, it was detected in roots and shoots. Translocation factor are lower than 1, showing that TCC remains preferentially in the root. Bioconcentration factors (BCF) is the ratio of the concentration of TCC in plant tissue and soil. For the roots and shoots, is obtained that soils treated with biosolids do not accumulate TCC, cause FBC <1, with exception of the soil treated with biosolids with a high concentration of “native” TCC (FBC: 1,7). Concentration factor (CF) were calculated for the simulator methods. For the extraction with HP-β-CD, FC<1 indicating that this methodology does not overestimate the bioavailable fraction, but behaves very similar to it. For the EA/RDSE method, FC of 10-4 are obtained, corroborating TCC characteristic such as low solubility. To validate the methods as biosimulators, a modeling through a simple correlation between TCC concentration in plant tissue and concentrations determined by simulator methods is used (HP-β-CD and EA/RDSE, 95% significant). For the cyclodextrin, significant correlations are obtained and explain between 37 and 95% of the variability for roots and shoots. For the vertical mode of EA/RDSE, correlations are also significant explaining between the 26 and 57% of the variability for roots and shoots, respectively. For the horizontal mode, correlation is significant to the roots, with a model explanation of 81%. It can be concluded that, the two developed methodologies (HP-β-CD and EA/RDSE) are biosimulators of the TCC bioavailable fraction in the roots of wheat plants cultured in soils treated with biosolids...
