The World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-medication as: "the selection and use of medicines by people for the purpose of treating diseases or symptoms that they themselves can identify". But when this act is performed erroneously it can lead us to various unfavorable health events, such as bacterial resistance, poisonings, adverse reactions, disease masking, among others. Chile is no exception to this contingent and momentous issue, which is why this work seeks to characterize the population in terms of their behavior against self-medication, based on the results of the National Health Survey conducted in 2016-2017. A prevalence of 26% was obtained, with men most at risk of self-medication, with the highest-risk groups (40.3%), belonging to urban areas (86.7%) of our country with studies between 8-12 years (48.8%). In addition, women are the most likely to generate polypharmacy (66%) and those who resort to self-medication are also the ones most at risk of using natural medicines to treat their conditions (OR = 13.34). Regarding the acquisition of medicines, 13% buy them in establishments not authorized by the health authority. Of the most widely consumed therapeutic groups, painkillers (51.4%) highlighting the use of acetaminophen (32.7%) and aspirin (18.3%), secondly are anti-inflammatory and anti-re pragmatic (24.5%) where ibuprofen consumption stands out (12.7%) celecoxib (2.4%). Self-medication is a practice installed in our country. Therefore, it is important to carry out work to promote the rational use of medicines by health personnel in order for self-medication to be done in a responsible manner...
