Children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) may have several difficulties in reading comprehension. However, there is still in debate the extent to which language skills and decoding are associated with this. Therefore, the objectives of this research are: (1) establish the existence of an association between oral and reading comprehension; decoding and reading comprehension in children with SLI and children with TLD. (2) Compare the association of reading comprehension established in relation to the decoding and oral comprehension between groups with SLI and TLD. The sample consisted of 25 children (12 with SLI and 13 TLD) who were in first grade and enrolled in schools with an Integration Project in Santiago. Reading comprehension, decoding and language skills of oral comprehension (narrative comprehension, inference and vocabulary) were evaluated. The results showed that children with SLI had a significantly lower performance than the ones with TLD in all the evaluated skills. In addition, we observed that in both groups (SLI and TLD) only decoding was significantly associated with reading comprehension. Finally, three types of readers profiles are proposed in children with SLI, considering their heterogeneous performance. We conclude that children with SLI correspond to a risk group reader, for which it is necessary to generate guidelines for intervention in order to reduce their difficulties at scholar age....

In the current investigation it is studied the frequency of use of mental verbs in children with SLI and TLD, through analyzing their corpus obtained after a narrative retelling task. It worked with a subsample belonging to a further investigation, which included 17 children with SLI and 14 children with TLD in first grade, and then, the same children in second grade. A transversal and longitudinal analysis was performed. In the first, the results of both groups were compared in first grade and second grade. In the second, the results of children with SLI in first grade and second grade were compared, and the results of children with TLD in first grade and second grade were compared. Through statistical analysis, p (significance) and d (effect size) values were obtained, showing a large value d in the second grade transversal analysis between children with SLI and TLD regarding to mental verbs. No significant differences were found in other analyses. The results suggest a similar frequency of use of mental verbs in children with SLI and TLD. However, the measure of effect size indicates that, expanding the sample, significant differences in the use of mental verbs could be found....

Hearing gives us the possibility to detect and know the world, being the starting and ending point of oral linguistic communication, it is important that there be early detection of hearing deficits that may appear. Said deficits could generate larger repercussions in a child’s development, especially in the acquisition of linguistic and communicative abilities which let the implementation of auditive correction and later intervention to be given at the correct moment in order to obtain better results. In Chile there are different entities that focus on intervention and communication for children with hearing difficulties but no formal records of what they have achieved their methodology, the number of children that have used their services, the focus of their interventions currently exists. For this reason, the aim of this seminar is to offer up to date and detailed information regarding the interventional and educational entities that offer auditive rehabilitation to children suffering from hearing loss and the current state of the Metropolitan Region regarding the matter as well as to give relevant information to therapists and the children’s family members. In order to complete this study, 15 of the aforementioned entities where invited to participate in the study, out of which 14 accepted. Through a series of interviews, the appropriate information was obtained and thus permitting to have a better understanding of the current state of auditive rehabilitation in the Metropolitan Region....
