(Universidad de Chile, 2017)

The ownership of pets, especially dogs, is a fact widely accepted in our culture; although it’s associated with a number of positive effects, for both owner’s physical and mental health, it has a number of side effects, especially if the human-animal bond is broken for some reason. The main reason reported for this break is the development of behavioral problems, a situation frequently associated with euthanasia, abuse and abandonment of affected animals. The aim of this study is to determine if the owner's personality and some socio-cultural factors are associated with the presentation of behavioral problems in dogs. For this, 48 consultants of the Santo Tomás Veterinary Health Center, located in La Pintana, were surveyed. The participants answered a questionnaire about the pet, its environment and the presentation of behavioral problems, and the questionnaire NEO-FFI (Costa y McCrae, 1992) adapted for the Chilean population, about the owner's personality. The results of these instruments were subjected to logistic regression, which determined that there is an association between the personality of the owner, the characteristics of dog’s social and fisical enviroment and the development of behavioral problems in dogs....

The present study it provides important information about the incidence of Salmonella in cats, specifically reared as pets in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago. It is worth mentioning that there are no prevalence studies with regards to this issue in Chile, and the aim of the study to look for a relative incidence associated with cats reared as pets, is a first step that allows more research in the near future on the subject, and thus, achieve better surveillance with regard to pets. Samples came from the districts of Puente Alto, Recoleta, Estación Central, Las Condes, Providencia and Ñuñoa, and were taken during the period between August 2016 and October 2017. There were 342 samples of stool collected, from which 308 were used for the study. A total incidence of 0% was observed, since no cat was positive to the microbiological method used. The incidence found in the present study is comparable to post-1980 studies in which an incidence of 1.9% is described and it closely resembles what has been seen in developed countries, with incidence studies in their populations of dogs and cats, as it is the case of the USA with an incidence of 0.6%...

Euthanasia is a common procedure in the clinical practice of small animals, despite not being considered in most of the curricula of veterinary medicine students. For this reason, it can generate stress in the professionals who must carry it out, especially in newly qualified veterinarians; as well as generating experiences that are difficult to erase for pet guardians. This systematic review describes the medical and effective communication procedures recommended for the euthanasia of dogs and cats. Additionally, it considers the perceptions of owners and veterinary doctors, on certain procedures that would make this experience less traumatic for the pet, the family, and the medical team. In the light of this collected information, a protocol of good practices for the euthanasia of small animals is proposed....

64% of homes in Chile have at least one pet. However, they do not share the same care measures to avoid problems that might be present among them and the environment. This study describes the demographic conditions of the research area in terms of companion animals, the interaction between these animals with native fauna, and perceived problems of irresponsible keeping of these animals. This will be explained through a cross-sectional descriptive analysis. A field survey was carried out within the town of Coya to a total of 254 randomly selected homes. The results indicate that 82% of the houses have at least one dog, with a human dog ratio of 1,5: 1 and 43% have cats, with a human cat ratio of 3,2: 1. 59% of dogs are vaccinated against the rabies virus by 2019, while 32% of cats are also vaccinated. Less than 35% of pets are sterilized. Birds, reptiles, rodents, lagomorphs, and insects have been chased by cats. In addition, we can encounter quique, fox, and cougar in dog cases. However, the most perceived most affected animals are farm animals, such as farmyard birds and young cattle. 46% of people consider that it is a problem that there are unsupervised dogs on the street because they can harm people. 31% indicate that it is a problem because they can harm themselves. Annoying noises and odors stand out among the stated problems. It can be concluded that irresponsible pet ownership in the town of Coya is a risk factor for both: people and animals. Having said that, it is important to take into account that it is necessary to apply population management, education and awareness measures for wildlife protection....
