Un laberinto hecho libro: una exploración de la complejidad narrativa y textual-gráfica de House of Leaves

Abstract

La presente investigación se concentra en realizar una exploración de los diversos elementos que le otorgan una complejidad narrativa y gráfico-textual a la novela House of Leaves. Este análisis se realizará por medio de una metodología exploratoria, al ser un texto compuesto de una considerable cantidad de diversos métodos y técnicas, algunos de los cuales no se pueden agrupar o definir concretamente. Al tener en consideración este aspecto multifacético, en vez de teorías literarias, se emplearán conceptos teóricos específicos para el apoyo en el análisis, como la definición de términos narrativos de Gérard Genette, la polifonía por Mijaíl Bajtín y la narración enmarcada. Además, se incluirán ideas de la novela posmodernista estadounidense y la literatura ergódica para contextualizar las construcciones más experimentales y gráficas del texto. El cuerpo principal del estudio se dividirá en tres segmentos: Primero se presentará una síntesis de la historia, enfocándose en la polifonía de voces narrativas y las múltiples narraciones que la constituyen, sirviendo de base para los siguientes segmentos. En la segunda parte, se concentrará en la estructura narrativa y cómo los elementos anteriormente mencionados se relacionan por medio de un esquema y, para finalizar en la última parte, se ilustrará la disposición fragmentaria y elementos gráficos del formato impreso de la obra. Es por medio de este análisis enfocado en los dos ámbitos de lo narrativo y la composición textual que se conseguirá abarcar los componentes que hacen de esta novela una lectura compleja.

The following research focuses on an exploration of the various elements that give both a narrative and graphic-textual complexity to the novel House of Leaves. This analysis will be conducted through an exploratory methodology, being a text composed of a considerable amount of diverse methods and techniques, some of which cannot be categorically designated or defined. Therefore, considering this multifaceted aspect, instead of literary theories, specific theoretical concepts will be used to support the analysis, such as the narrative terms defined by Gérard Genette, polyphony by Mikhail Bakhtin and the embedded narrative. In addition to this, ideas from the American postmodern novel and ergodic literature will be included to contextualize the more experimental and graphic compositions of the text. The main body of the study will be divided into three segments: First, a summary of the story will be presented, focusing on the polyphony of narrative voices and the multiple narratives that constitute it, serving as a basis for the following segments. The second part will concentrate upon the narrative structure and how the aforementioned elements are related by means of a diagram, and finally, in the last part there will be a depiction of the fragmentary arrangement and graphic elements of the printed format of the work. It is through this analysis that focuses on the two spheres of narrative and textual composition that it will be able to encompass the components that make this novel a complex read.
