El cultivo y las oportunidades de comercialización internacional del azafrán

Abstract

El azafrán (Crocus Sativus L.) es una planta cuyo cultivo se destaca por su alto precio, lo que motivó a investigar su producción en Chile, y si para ello se cuentan con las condiciones agroclimáticas, pues debido a la propia rusticidad de la planta podría potencialmente adaptarse con facilidad. En este trabajo se analizó a lo largo de Chile, las características agroclimáticas y se las comparó con los requerimientos del cultivo, de manera de definir las potenciales zonas en los que la planta se podría establecer. Los resultados se organizaron en 3 zonas: Zona 1 cumple los requerimientos de temperatura y Días-Grado, pero no cumple con las necesidades hídricas; Zona 2 tiene la temperatura y agua, pero con déficit de Días-Grado; Zona 3 no cumple con la temperatura ni los Días-Grado con precipitaciones que satisfacen la demanda hídrica del cultivo. Concluyendo que el cultivo de azafrán desde la región de Arica y Parinacota hasta la región de Coquimbo está limitado a realizarse bajo un régimen de riego, entre la región de Valparaíso hasta la región de la Araucanía es necesario también realizar manejos que permitan suplir esta mediante el uso de cubiertas plásticas y desde la región de Los Ríos hasta la región de Magallanes solo sería factible bajo un ambiente controlado por invernaderos. Adicionalmente, se identificaron las oportunidades comerciales que presentaría Chile en calidad de exportador de azafrán, sugiriendo a España y Arabia Saudita como destinos principales. También, en el periodo 2018-2022, se observó que el dinamismo de la oferta fue superior a la demanda, por lo que el precio unitario se redujo. En cuanto a los precios FOB - que dependen de la calidad - fluctúan entre USD 1.580/kg y USD/kg 1,4 y, siendo el promedio de 797 USD/kg. Se determinó, que la suscripción de Chile de múltiples acuerdos comerciales, no le aportan ventajas competitivas significativas, a este potencial producto de exportación.

Saffron (Crocus Sativus L.) is a plant whose cultivation stands out for its high price, which motivated us to investigate its production in Chile, and if agroclimatic conditions are available for this, then due to the rusticity of the plant itself could potentially be easily adapted. Concluding that the cultivation of saffron from the region of Arica and Parinacota to the region of Coquimbo is limited to being carried out under an irrigation regime, between the region of Valparaíso to the region of Araucanía it is also necessary to carry out management that allows this to be supplied through use of plastic covers and from the Los Ríos region to the Magallanes region would only be feasible under an environment controlled by greenhouses. Additionally, the commercial opportunities that Chile would present as a saffron exporter were identified, suggesting Spain and Saudi Arabia as main destinations. Also, in the period 2018-2022, it was observed that the dynamism of supply was greater than demand, so the unit price was reduced. As for FOB prices - which depend on quality - they fluctuate between USD 1,580/kg and USD 1.4/kg, with the average being USD 797/kg. It was determined that Chile's subscription to multiple trade agreements does not provide significant competitive advantages to this potential export product.
