Diagnóstico y evaluación de asesoría técnica en riego de pequeños agricultores en zonas de escasez hídrica de la Provincia del Limarí, Región de Coquimbo

Abstract

La Región de Coquimbo han desarrollado e implementado diferentes estrategias para enfrentar la escasez hídrica, destacando la construcción de grandes embalses que han permitido mejorar la seguridad de riego para la agricultura. La Provincia del Limarí destaca por tener la mayor capacidad de almacenamiento de agua, la mayor superficie agropecuaria y la mayor superficie bajo riego de la Región; sin embargo, la situación de escasez hídrica ha empeorado, superando los registros históricos. Esto hace fundamental que, independiente del sistema de riego utilizado, el diseño, operación y mantención de estos sistemas sean adecuados para obtener todos los beneficios en lo que a eficiencia hídrica se refiere. En este estudio, se realizó un diagnóstico sobre la pequeña agricultura en 19 localidades de la Provincia del Limarí, que reflejó la heterogeneidad existente entre los agricultores, sistemas productivos, fuentes de agua y sistemas de riego. Por otra parte, se evaluó y analizó el impacto ex ante y ex post de una asesoría técnica en riego, donde se identificaron criterios y prácticas relacionadas al riego estadísticamente significativas, ya que fueron más accesibles de adoptar por los pequeños agricultores de este estudio. En este sentido, la capacitación permitió generar criterios y prácticas de riego adecuadas entre los agricultores, adaptadas a demandas hídricas de los cultivos y suministro de agua en constante cambio.

The Coquimbo Region has developed and implemented various strategies to address water scarcity, notably the construction of large reservoirs that have improved irrigation security for agriculture. The Limarí Province stands out for having the largest water storage capacity, the largest agricultural area, and the largest irrigated area in the region. However, the water scarcity situation has worsened, surpassing historical records. This makes it essential that, regardless of the irrigation system used, the design, operation, and maintenance of these systems are adequate to achieve all the benefits related to water efficiency. In this study, a diagnosis was conducted on small-scale agriculture in 19 localities of the Limarí Province, which reflected the existing heterogeneity among farmers, production systems, water sources, and irrigation systems. Additionally, the ex-ante and ex-post impact of technical irrigation advice was evaluated and analyzed, identifying statistically significant irrigation-related criteria and practices, as they were more accessible for adoption by the small-scale farmers in this study. In this sense, the technical advice made it possible to generate the appropriate irrigation criteria and practices among farmers, specially considering that crop water demand and water supply are constantly changing.
