During the past half-century both policies and theoretical analysis have concentrated heavily on the impact of foreign trade in the context of individual development efforts of developing countries. With most of the developing countries emphasizing the shift from an enclave of raw materials to an industrial enclave, the focus of economic theory and policy lay in the relationships between the import-substituting industrial sector and the rest of the world. Inevitably the discussion focused on promoting this enclave by interacting with the rest of the world while agriculture was being neglected by scattered services and industries. In recent years, it is fair to recognize that analysts and policy makers have gradually become aware of the need to pay more attention to the agricultural sector. Despite the fact that, as development progresses, the industrial sector is taking an increasing proportion of production and total employment....

This paper presents the empirical estimation of a dynamic investment model, which allows to determine endogenously the optimum path of expansion of a quasi-fixed productive asset, as well as its price. An advantage is that the price determined for this production factor corresponds to its asset price and not the rental price originally derived by Jorgenson (1963), with its known empirical complications. The model builds on the latest developments in modern investment theory, and incorporates rational expectations in the sense of Ruth (1961). It reapplies to the investment in machinery and equipment by the agricultural sector of the United States, in the period 1948-1983. Estimates are obtained, which seem to be the first reported of the determinants of the supply curve of the North American industry and agricultural equipment. The importance of these determinants in the investment decisions of the agro-productive sector is demonstrated. Some policy implications are discussed, as well as possible future research based on the model and the estimates presented....

To achieve a sustainable agricultural production there are used different organic and inorganic products, among them we found the fertilizers and pesticides. When they are applied most of the product falls to the ground, generating significant sources of pollution in the areas near the application and depending on the mobility ofthe pesticide, it can reach more remote afeas. That is why it is important to determine the pesticide residues in soil after their application, being the selection of the extraction method crucial for the subsequent traces detection. In the present work there was evaluated the QUECIIERS extraction technique, a method used in food but modified for a different and complex matrix like soil in order to achieve acceptable efficiencies multi-residue extraction of 20 pesticides and their subsequent determination by gas chromatography with electron capture and mass detection. The method was applied for the determination of pesticides in three soil samples from an agricultural site with different slopes between them. The Results indicated that 75% ofthe pesticides tested had acceptable efficiencies, thus meeting the objective of achieving multiresidue determination of pesticides in agricultural soil samples by extraction methodology QIIECIIERS. Besides, the presence of the fungicide penconazole was only detected in the three samples, being the highest concentration ofpesticide found in the area with less slope (Vera:o)....
