Caballo de madera. Una aproximación a las representaciones sociales que los directores de carrera construyen acerca de las características del estudiante en el contexto de una universidad privada de Santiago
(Universidad de Chile, 2018)

ABSTRACT The strong diversification of Chilean universities and their institutional projects, despite the efforts of recent years to safeguard the quality of the Higher Education System, still keeps invisible some dimensions of university work and the relationships that are built there. The understanding of the educational fact, as a social practice, underlies the mechanisms of regulation of the State, the policies of each institution or the discursive devices proposed by the universities to the public space, configuring a deep and sometimes uncomfortable reality in this space of meanings. The present research, a case study based on the comprehensive/interpretative paradigm, tries to capture from the directive actors of a private university of Santiago without institutional accreditation of quality -in the terms given by the Chilean regulation-, the social representations that emerge from their speeches about the student with whom they coexist day by day, their motivations and expectations. Thus, everyday situations are revealed where nothing is what it seems, around which emerge representations of a student/client who individually negotiates the conditions of paid service; a lacking student who, given his origin, would not carry with him the minimums to meet the challenges of university education, and his nemesis: a suitable student, a model of comparison for all others; all representations that, in the specificity of this social space, build the sense of professional education, public faith through...
